Buying a boat is a major financial decision. Even if you have enough money to purchase one in cash, it would not be a sound move. There is no telling where else you may need to use that cash. A wiser move is to put that money in the bank and apply for a boat loan instead. While your money earns interests, you are already enjoying your boat and paying only the minimum amount due per month.
Getting a loan has been made fast and easy. Several lenders or financial agencies have sites on the Internet. They can process your request for application in as fast as a week. And, they are flexible in terms of repayment schedules. Repayment terms for boat loans may be set from five years to as long as twenty years, depending on how expensive your boat is. They may also help design a convenient repayment schedule. You may be given the option to get either a fixed interest rate for the duration of the term or stake a risk and go for an adjustable interest rate.
As it is with lending institutions, these lenders charge a boat-loan-processing fee. The amount varies, but the standard practice is to charge percentage of your loan amount. Most will also require a down payment that would range from ten to twenty percent of the cost of the boat. Others may only require about five percent or lesser amount as down payment. You may also have to allocate an amount for a boat surveyor. Banks and even some of these online lenders will require an appraisal of the boat first. They may also want you to pay any liens put against the boat, such as unpaid docking fees.
Always consider many different financial institutions first. Then, create a short list of those that can offer you more flexibility. This way, you can get the best package and repayment schedule.

Boat Insurance - Peace of Mind for Your Marine Adventures

As with all vehicles a boat is legible for an insurance policy, under the Marine Insurance Act. While some small boats kept on your premises can be covered by home insurance, Marine insurance can cover not just a seafaring boat but also the goods, as throughout marine history ships have been lost with very expensive cargoes aboard, due to the dangerous nature of sea voyages.
Boat insurance is often cheaper than car insurance especially for a small boat. A comprehensive plan will cover damage to the hull, the machinery and the parts. It is also worth checking if the plan covers theft, injury and any specialist equipment on board like fishing tackle.
Insurance varies a lot depending on the boat. Narrow boats, speedboats, dinghies, yachts, rowing boats and motorboats all have different systems for working out a quote. A fibreglass boat (usually GRP, glass reinforced plastic), like most speedboats, is in a higher insurance band than a wooden or steel boat such as a narrow boat. This is because fibreglass hulls can be damaged or dented very easily while steel hulls for example are very hard to cause any significant damage to. You can get cheaper insurance for diesel powered boats, as they are less likely to explode, and also for using coast guard approved fire extinguishers. A certification in a boat safety course may also reduce insurance.
It also depends on where you intend to sail the boat. The boat will be in a different insurance category depending on whether you intend to sail it in canals (least expensive), rivers, lakes and tidal waters (more expensive) and the ocean.
There are also insurance policies for special circumstances. You can have a boat insured for damage while it is being built, or for a vessel sailing into a war zone or terrorist associated waters, or for specific cargoes such as highly perishable goods that may fail due to delays.

So, you're sailing along happily on your 40' yacht (just you and your wife), some 200 miles from the nearest landfall and you see a boat ahead. As you get closer you notice that the vessel is lying very low in the water and the people aboard are waving their arms frantically. As you approach you see that the vessel is very close to sinking and there are about 20 men aboard - obviously a boatload of refugees. It appears that the boat is going down fast.

There are two ways that you can obtain fianance the first is via a Marine Mortgage which is more suitable for boats in excess of �10,000 , the second is via a Marine Loan which is more suitable for the smaller boats or for refitting boats. Insurance and registration of your boat will normally be required by the finance company.

Phillipe Fessard an experienced French sailor, has opened a new yachting centre at Praia do Jacaré, on the Rio Paraiba behind the port of Cabedelo, close to Joao Pessoa, (World Port Index No. 12710, 6 58'S., 34 50'W.). The buoyed channel to Cabedelo is well marked for either day or night entry, with a least depth of more than 8 meters.
